$50 each or $75 for two
Workshop I (1:00 - 2:30pm, intermediate/advanced)
Rags, Drags, Stomps and Shuffles:
The Music of the African-American Mandolinist
In the recent resurgence and revival of old
time music mandolinists have overlooked a rich body of music that was
once performed by African-Americans. This music was innovative and
passionate; great “new” material for the American mandolin repertoire.
In this session we will explore the music of the early string and jug
band musicians. Exercises and arrangements will introduce the “blues”
elements that shaped this music: melody and phrasing, seventh chord
voicings and rhythms.
Workshop II (3:00 - 4:30pm, intermediate/advanced)
The Blues and Bluegrass
In the hands of
Bill Monroe, the fiddle tunes and old-time music of his Uncle Penn
Vandiver blended with the blues he learned from black guitarist Arnold
Schultz and bluegrass was born. In this workshop we will explore the
elements of the blues and how they shaped bluegrass. Learn how to make
your music more powerful by stressing its blues.
For both workshops music, written in standard and TAB, will be provided and the use of recording devices is strongly encouraged.
