Irish Flute and Whistle Workshop

Class will begin with a demonstration of the variety of styles of Irish flute and whistle playing, and Jonathan will talk about the respective approaches and techniques used to achieve stylistic differences.  A history of the development of traditional flute playing will be presented, and special attention will be paid to the influence of uillean piping.  Techniques and ornamentation derived from piping will be demonstarted in the context of tunes.  This workshop will also focus on developing problem solving skills relating to the transfer of fiddle and accordion tunes to the flute and whistle.  The importance of diaphragm support, breath placement, and embouchure will also be discussed.  This workshop is for novice to upper intermediate players.  Attendees should already be familiar with their instruments and able to play at least a few tunes.  Pen and paper and recording device are recommended.
