Sunday February 7th BLUES GUITAR WORKSHOP with STEVE JAMES
$30 each or $50 for both
1. ROOTS & BLUES FINGERSTYLE GUITAR (beg./int. level..90 min.) 12:00 Noon
Compact, rhythmic, bluesy song arrangements in standard tuning will be
used to demonstrate useful chord shapes and runs along with the basic
moves involved in syncopated thumb-and-finger picking. Bring a
guitar and something to write with/on. Some tab and handouts
supplied. Sound recording OK. (No vid, please.)
2. OPEN TUNINGS AND BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR (beg./int. level...90 min.) 2:00pm
Learn the basic chord shapes and bluesy phrases in "Spanish" (open G)
and "Vastopol" (open D) tunings-the ones most used in country
blues. Then slip on a slide for a session on how to get good
tone, pitch control and vibrato in the context of a couple of bluesy
song themes. Bring a guitar and a slide (if you don't have one,
we do!). Pencil and paper are good. So is a portable sound
recorder.
STEVE JAMES...a long-time mainstay on the Austin roots music scene, is
known for his live and recorded performances as well as numerous
published articles, lessons and books for Acoustic Guitar and
instructional DVDs for Homespun. His workshops are mainly
hands-on experiences which, like his live shows, are leavened with hot
picking and cool anecdotes about the music and the musicians who have
played it.
